Reaching Pewter City in Pokémon HeartGold requires players to navigate through the Kanto region after completing the main Johto storyline. Because Pewter City is located in western Kanto, players must follow a specific sequence of story events and routes to gain access. Understanding the precise directions ensures a smooth journey through the post-game content.

Prerequisites for Entering Kanto

Before heading toward Pewter City, trainers must first earn all eight Johto Gym Badges and defeat the Elite Four at the Indigo Plateau. Once you are recognized as the Champion, Professor Elm will grant you a ticket to board the S.S. Aqua in Olivine City. Taking this ship brings you directly to Vermilion City, serving as your primary entry point into Kanto.

Restoring Power to Access Diglett's Cave

Direct access to Pewter City from Vermilion City is initially blocked by a sleeping Snorlax near Route 11. To wake it up, players must travel north to Cerulean City and resolve the Power Plant crisis on Route 9. After recovering the stolen machine part from the Cerulean Gym and returning it to the Power Plant, you will receive the EXPN Card upgrade at the Radio Tower in Lavender Town.

Navigating Route 2 and Arriving in Pewter City

With the EXPN Card equipped, tune your Pokégear radio to the Poké Flute channel while standing in front of Snorlax in Vermilion City. Once Snorlax is moved, enter Diglett's Cave and travel all the way through to emerge on Route 2. Head north along Route 2, use Cut on any blocking saplings, and you will directly enter Pewter City where Brock's Gym awaits.
